Akhannouch presided over the Souss-Massa-Drâa regional council from 2003 to 2007. He was Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries from 2007 (the portfolio widened in 2017 to rural development, water and forests) until 2021, and interim Minister of Finance from August to October 2013. He became RNI leader in 2016 and Prime Minister in 2021. In January 2026 he announced he would not seek a third term as party president, and Mohamed Chaouki was elected to succeed him on 7 February 2026.
