The party was founded on 13 January 1980 as Die Grünen in West Germany, growing out of anti-nuclear, environmental, peace and new-left movements. The present party formed in 1993 through a merger with Alliance 90 and the East German Green Party. Since November 2024 Felix Banaszak and Franziska Brantner have been co-leaders. It won 11.6% and 85 seats in the 2025 federal election and governs in seven states, with Cem Özdemir Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg. In Saxony-Anhalt in 2026 it won 8 of 83 seats.
