History

The BSW was founded in January 2024 by Sahra Wagenknecht and others from The Left. It won 6.1 percent and 6 seats in the 2024 European election and 11 to 16 percent in the 2024 eastern state elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg. It joined coalitions in Brandenburg and Thuringia from December 2024, both marked by turmoil and defections in 2025 and 2026. In the 2025 federal election it missed the threshold with 4.981 percent. Wagenknecht stepped down as chair in November 2025, and in Saxony-Anhalt in 2026 the party won 5.3 percent and 5 seats.
