Von Angern joined the Party of Democratic Socialism in 1996 and The Left in 2007, after the two parties merged. She entered the Saxony-Anhalt Landtag in 2002, was deputy leader of the Left parliamentary group from 2014 to 2020 and has chaired it since December 2020. She holds a law degree and has practised as a lawyer in Magdeburg since 2006. In 2021 a party conference confirmed her as lead candidate with 85.6% support. In the 2026 state election The Left won 8 of 83 seats.
