He is deputy chair of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group and leads the CDU's Saxony-Anhalt Bundestag members. He is named in the race for Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt after the 2026 state election, in which the CDU's lead candidate was Sven Schulze.
Career
Müller trained as a banker and has sat in the Bundestag since 2017, winning the Dessau-Wittenberg constituency directly; in 2021 he took 34.3 per cent there. Wikipedia lists him on the Bundestag's Finance Committee from 2018 to 2021 and as deputy chair of the CDU/CSU group since 2021, serving under Ralph Brinkhaus, Friedrich Merz and Jens Spahn. He has led the group's Saxony-Anhalt members since 2021. The CDU chose him as its lead candidate in Saxony-Anhalt for the 2025 federal election with 81 per cent approval. After the CDU fell to 17.2 per cent in the 2026 state election, he announced a bid for the state party chair.
Controversies
Volksstimme reports that days before the September 2026 state election Müller said that if polling became results, Ulrich Siegmund of the AfD would hold a mandate to form a government, while ruling out any coalition with Die Linke. The newspaper reports that Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticised him for weakening his own party's lead candidate, Sven Schulze, and that tensions between the two were noted in the party.
