Chalmers studied at Griffith University and earned a PhD at the Australian National University in 2004 on Paul Keating's prime ministership. He worked in the Queensland public service, for the Labor Party and as an adviser to Wayne Swan and others, and was Swan's chief of staff from 2010 to 2013. Elected for Rankin in 2013, he was Shadow Treasurer from 2019 and became Treasurer in the Albanese government in 2022, delivering a budget surplus of $22.1 billion in 2023.
