Dohnal was born on 22 May 1980 in Ostrava and works as a real estate broker. He joined the ODS in 2001 and has sat on the Ostrava-Jih district council since 2002, serving as deputy mayor of the district from 2018 to 2022. He failed to win a city council seat in 2018 but won one in 2022 on the Spolu list. On 26 April 2023 the council elected him mayor with 37 of 55 votes after Tomáš Macura was recalled, backed by a coalition of ANO, Spolu, Ostravak, Mayors for Ostrava and the Pirates. He named a strategic plan, a concert hall, hospital development and more money for city districts as priorities.
